Welcome to the Bemm River Angling Club Home Page.  The Bemm River Township is located in East Gippsland in Victoria, Australia on the shore of Sydenham Inlet 441 kilometres east of Melbourne.  The Bemm River flows into the inlet east of the town and the ocean beaches are a short drive to the southwest.  The township is famous for its fishing but in more recent times other nature based activities have also attracted holiday makers to the area including bird watchers, eco-tourists and hikers.  The inlet fishing is best from a small boat, which may be launched from one of the two ramps. The town contains a hotel, a shop, a caravan park and a number of self contained flats and bungalows.  Petrol is not available in the Town and should be purchased from Orbost or Cann River on the way.

“Limit your Catch, Don’t Catch your Limit”

The Bemm River Angling Club does not compete in heaviest bag competitions and, in the interests of conservation, encourages visiting clubs not to indulge in this

practice when fishing Sydenham Inlet – refer Club and Competition Rules on the Club Events page.

Fishing Information

Inlet Fishing

It is advisable to fish from a small to medium sized boat, as access to the inlet and the channel is otherwise limited.  Boats can be hired locally, so by going to the Bemm Information page you can obtain the details.  The Bemm is famous for bream fishing and anglers travel from near and far for a chance to land a big one.  The Inlet closes to the ocean when the sand bar at the mouth builds up in rough weather.  The Inlet is opened by blasting only after it rises about 1.6 metres above the normal level.  With the new raised car park there will no longer be flooding of the car park and the landing ramp at the Main Jetty will still be in use.  Care should be taken in rough weather.  Back ropes are recommended in rough weather.  Seek advice if it looks like being rough and you are using the Finger Jetty.  If it is rough and the wind is from the south or west, do not attempt to cross the inlet in a small boat.  Stay at the refuge hut at the mouth of the channel until the weather calms off.  Use your mobile phone to contact your accommodation house.  If you do not have a reception on your phone and you are stranded there, phone 000 and notify the water police.  All phone companies will divert to the best reception to get to 000.

When the Inlet is open to the ocean, the water level in Sydenham Inlet can result in the sand bars being covered by only a few centre-meters of water or even becoming exposed.  If the water level is low you may be required to get out and pull your boat across the sand bars in to the river or to Swan Lake Channel.

River Fishing

There are several places to access the river by walking including at the back of the farm through the walk way provided, from the road into town at Dolly’s Garden, from the track at the barrel drain on the road into town and from around the bridge.  Above the waterfall near the bridge, the river is fresh water and trout and bass are sought in some of the upstream rugged valleys.

Beach Fishing

Surf or rock fishing is possible south west of the town by a short road trip toward Pearl Point or by boating across the inlet to the channel and surf fishing at the blowhole or at the mouth of the inlet channel.  Tides at the Ninety Mile Beach around the Bemm are 3 hours 21 minutes before Port Phillip Heads.  Click here to get the tides and the weather.
