Our group, the Bemm River Angling Club, is most concerned with this draft. It recommends that the high water ramp and jetty at Sydenham Inlet be dismantled, and this area only be used for kayaks and canoes. See page 68.
This second boat ramp (fingerling) is our high water ramp, and in recent times an important back up in busy holiday periods. As up to 90 boats are unloaded into the estuary at busy times, our club despair at the prospect of losing such a valuable structure.
The main ramp is in appalling condition and is desperate for a major upgrade/replaced.
On page 68 of the draft it refers to a two lane ramp and jetty on Luderick Point.
We have only ever had a single lane ramp and has never been used as double. Also on this page it describes the second jetty as such, when it is in fact a pontoon. Since its establishment this pontoon has proved to be an environmental disaster, as often it sits on the bottom and does not float, making it trap the mobile weed, which occurs naturally in the estuary, this weed then lodges itself against the pontoon, creating havoc for all boating.
Safety issues are a huge priority and in rough weather the pontoon whiplashes and is most unstable.
Our angling club is aware that the Gippsland Boating Coastal Plan, when adopted will be forwarded to your office. Our club seeks your advice to help deal with this matter. We are intending to respond to this draft in the appropriate manner, however we are such a small community, and find it hard to be heard usually being totally ignored.
If this draft goes ahead, it will severely impact upon business houses and the local community members, not to mention the hundreds of visitors that visit Bemm River
